AMSTERDAM - Most museumgoers associate this city with the world-class Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. Last summer, the Netherlands capital opened a third heralded venue, Hermitage Amsterdam, a branch of the renowned State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Run by a local foundation, Hermitage Amsterdam is independently financed.
Everything about it is magnificent, from its setting along the bustling Amstel River to its location in the Amstelhof, a 17th-century building formerly used as a state-run Continue reading »

STANDING 3,346 feet above sea level on a steep mountain slope overlooking the village of Bruck, Austria , I found it was easy to feel a little breathless. As the morning fog lifted, the jagged peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountain range — including the mighty Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain at 12,460 feet — slowly emerged. Ah, these hills are very much alive.
The bray of a donkey brought that point home as we sipped hot coffee on a creaky wooden balcony and watched our visible Continue reading » -

Salt Lake City — The view from Mount Tuscarora was magnificent. Surrounded by the snow-covered Wasatch Range of northern Utah , our group reveled in the 1,800 feet of untracked powder that awaited us — with not a single snowboard rider or skier in sight. Several miles of rugged high-alpine terrain separated us from the nearest ski resort, but it only took a few hours by splitboard to get there.
For snowboarders without the budget or inclination to use a snowmobile or helicopter, and Continue reading » -

THE BASICS
The Roosevelt , formerly the Fairmont, reopened in July after an 18-month, $170 million restoration and several delays, having been shuttered after the waters from Hurricane Katrina flooded the basement and mangled the plumbing and electricity. It was also rechristened a Waldorf Astoria property and reverted to the moniker of its heyday from the 1920s to the ’60s. Back then the New Orleans landmark was flamboyantly famous enough to serve as the model for Arthur Hailey’s Continue reading » -

DUBLIN - The Cake Café is a hidden treasure off bustling Camden Street in Dublin. Located in a passageway between an alley and the rear exit of a paper shop, it is the creation of Michelle Darmody, 33, who learned the art of baking from her mother.
Everything here is made from scratch, using as many local products as possible, and the selection varies daily. On a recent weekday, all the tables were filled as customers sampled lemon slice, traditional sponge cake filled with fresh cream and Continue reading »
